April 1st kicks off a new paragliding season for us here in the Anchorage area. The days are longer and warmer now and if you are interested in becoming a paraglider pilot and flying this coming Summer, call, or text, or email to get signed up.
How to learn: Learning to paraglide starts by contacting a USHPA (United States Hang gliding and Paragliding Association) Certified Instructor and scheduling a day to get out, and if the weather cooperates you will be fitted with gear, learn to hook in and start by kiting the wing on flat ground. A tandem flight might be possible too. By the end of your first day you will have learned the setup and break down, some terminology, and start to understand how to control the glider. In two to four days you will be able to handle the glider for inflation, launch, short flights and landing. When you and your instructor feel comfortable and safe, we move up to larger hills and longer flights. You will also learn weather theory and aerodynamics to gain understanding that will be verified by written and oral exams. In approximately 17 days of instruction, you should have finished your 35 required flights and 2 written tests, you will be able to fly on your own- Solo! At that point you will have the opportunity to go out and practice what you have learned at different sites in your local area by yourself. This course of education ends with a P2 certification from USHPA verifying that you can safely pursue solo flights in good conditions.
Tandem Paragliding: $250 A great way to try out the sport of paragliding. You will launch with a certified tandem instructor, take the controls and maybe even soar.
Combo Lessons: $350.00 This is a tandem lesson combined with a couple hours of solo training. The solo ground training will give you a chance to learn to setup, inflate, kite, deflate, and pack up. You will learn the basics ready to go into a P1 course. Most of the time it is private. Meaning one on one with your instructor.
P1 Course: $600.00 A 4 day hands on course in the Anchorage/Mat-Su area. You will learn all about the basic setup and how to take-off and land for short flights.
Note: The tandem lesson and P-1 course will be considered part of your payment towards the full P-2 certification. You don't have to commit to it before you experience the thrill.
P2 Course: $2500.00 The pilot course. Approximately 17 days of hands on flight training and ground instruction to achieve your USHPA P2 rating. The certification is more about your proficiency and less about hours in lessons. Your safety and skills are our primary concern. When you sign up for the course, we will do everything we need to get you there.

How much does a paraglider cost?
This varies between makers, models, countries, but a middle of the range a canopy, harness, and reserve will normally cost somewhere in the region of $5,000.00 to $5,500.00 Keep in mind that there is other essential gear associated with flying such as a helmet, boots, variometer and unlimited assessories for those that want to be stylish! Instruction Above and Beyond It is highly encouraged that students purchase their own paragliding equipment early in the training program. This not only provides you with the best in paraglider technology and safety, but allows you to become familiar with your own gear, it's performance and comfort. Once you have completed all the required skills for your rating and we are 100% confident with your abilities, you are free to fly within your own abilities. Tandemonium will always be available to help further your skills or advanced ratings , answer your questions and provide any needed advice or assistance with new gear. |
